Researchers from TheBabyWebsite.com have recently published lists of Britain, and The World’s, most unfortunate names. It could be easily argued that the names aren’t so much “unfortunate” as “dreadful puns”, as truly unfortunate names are more likely to come from the latter-day trend of individualistic parents who lumber their progeny with such non-conformist designations as “Apple”, “Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily”, “Tallulah Does The Hula From Hawaii”, “Depressed Cupboard Cheesecake“, “Stoli”, etc.

The list published is primarily stuff which would turn up in an episode of I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue, such as Stan Still, Carrie Oakey, Barb Dwyer, Tim Burr, and the alltime classic, Teresa Green.

For Stan Still, 76, living with his name has been a test of his patience.

The retired RAF airman, from Cirencester, Gloucs, said: “My name has been a blooming millstone around my neck my entire life.

“When I was in the RAF my commanding officer used to shout ‘Stan Still, get a move on’ and roll about laughing. It got hugely boring after a while.”

Over at Londonist they’re showcasing some excellent (/woeful) pun-based London shop names.

Pure hilarity.

On the offchance this is illegibile, this place is a purveyor of chickpea-based vegetarian fare, entitled “Just Falafs”.

As humorous as this and the other entries may be, they’re still not a patch on the all-time masterpiece from just off Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

Aye.

It shouldn’t happen to a dog

Recently learned of a UK-based dog minding database, who have obviously based their name on a well-known chain of British discount shops. Unfortunately (I guess) as a recently new arrival, the name they’ve chosen isn’t so much an obvious play on words relating to that shop chain, so much as a frigging disturbing concept. The dog minding website? Hound Stretcher.

Reluctant as I am to let a quality pun go past…
